Te Aroha Hohaia feared for her husband’s safety as she watched him tumble 70 metres down into a rocky gully on Mt Taranaki.
“I just had to sit there and watch him slide down, I could see him hit rocks on the way,” the South Taranaki District councillor said.
“I could see him trying to grab things on his way down.”
Ms Hohaia and her husband Greg van Paassen were tramping along the Lake Dive track on Sunday when disaster struck about 2pm.
